All-sans
On February 11, 2025, we will conclude our two month study of the Metta Sutra.
7:00 PM/ET First Congregational Church of Falmouth, or on Zoom at: https://zoom.us/j/7096899032?status=success#success password FSZS
You have two assignments for our discussion that night. First, study my comments in Blue as I gave my comments on the Sutra. If indeed we use Zen in everyday life, then we need to explore translating “Zen-Talk.” Second, beside my comments write your own (maybe in red?) as comparison-of- the-comparisons.
We will review these commentaries in detail.

Karaniya Metta Sutta: The Buddha's Words on Loving-Kindness
translated from the Pali by
The Amaravati Sangha © 2004
This is what should be done Walking the Talk
By one who is skilled in goodness, If Skilled you perform the skill (implement)l
And who knows the path of peace: The Steps and the Big Picture
Let them be able and upright, Willing and Ready
Straightforward and gentle in speech, Direct and Gentle Loving Kindness
Humble and not conceited, None Soclisitous
Contented and easily satisfied, Unconsuming and Patient
Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways. Not Consumed/Demanding
Peaceful and calm and wise and skillful, Translucent
Not proud or demanding in nature. One With
Let them not do the slightest thing An Unfolding Preparedness
That the wise would later reprove. Understanding Uprightness
Wishing: In gladness and in safety, Whole Heartedly
May all beings be at ease. Diffusing
Whatever living beings there may be; All
Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none, All
The great or the mighty, medium, short or small, All
The seen and the unseen, Real and Absolute
Those living near and far away, Everywhere interconnected
Those born and to-be-born, Inclusivity equanimity
May all beings be at ease! Together in This We can then…
Let none deceive another, No trickery-Cooperation
Or despise any being in any state. No Hate-Compassion
Let none through anger or ill-will No Volitional karma
Wish harm upon another. or residuel hate
Even as a mother protects with her life Compassion
Her child, her only child, Loving-Kindness to all
So with a boundless heart Heart-Felt
Should one cherish all living beings; All
Radiating kindness over the entire world: Mindfulness
Spreading upwards to the skies, Everywhere
And downwards to the depths; Everywhere
Outwards and unbounded, Everywhere
Freed from hatred and ill-will. Enlightened
Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down
Free from drowsiness, Awake
One should sustain this recollection. Now we can see and hear it
This is said to be the sublime abiding. The Buddha Way is Unsurpassable
By not holding to fixed views, Impermanent flow
The pure-hearted one, having clarity of vision, Awake and Enlightened
Being freed from all sense desires, Liberation from Dukkha
Is not born again into this world. Nirvana
