What's In A Name: Katto

We name things to communicate. This labeling process requires some forethought and practice. In the English Christian tradition a baby has at least two names. The name of the family and Christian name. The former, is the current rendition of the evolution of the trade, place, characteristic, and/or title of ancestors, and the latter are names of people from the Bible.

So, what's in a name?

During our Dharma discussion Tuesday night 6:50-8:15/ET, Katto Garth Smelser will explore this question as an aspect of his Zen practice. Here is a hint about his talk:

"When Mara challenged Siddhartha Gautama on who would testify for his right to awakening, the Buddha, without words, touched the earth and Mara was defeated.  From that silent and thunderous touch, I like to imagine, sprouted our entwining vines--Katto--as testament to our Buddha-nature."

Please join us in our monthly Dhara discussion led by a member of the Falmouth Soto Zen Sangha and invite others to join us.
